Sincona sale 50, lot 1208

This specimen was lot 1208 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 10,500 CHF (about US$12,665 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Veld Pond 1902, Pilgrims Rest. Äusserst selten. Nur 986 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich. (South Africa, field pound of 1902, Pilgrims Rest. Extremely rare. Only 986 pieces struck, Extremely fine.)"

South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1902 by the Afrikaner republic in the final throes of the Boer War. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again.
