Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 53346
SB421-53346r.jpg

This specimen was lot 53346 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Exceptional Quality Sinkiang 5 Mace CHINA. Sinkiang. 5 Mace (Miscals), AH 1328 (1910). PCGS MS-61 Gold Shield. The single second finest certified of the date on the PCGS population report with only one finer (MS-62). Because of the crude nature of this series Sinkiang coinage is incredibl[y] RARE in this high state of preservation. This somewhat flashy survivor exhibits bold well defined central motifs with a bit of unevenness due to a small straight planchet clip at 12 o'clock on the obverse. This lovely silver minor displays attractive light gray tone with a fair amount of original mint bloom remaining in the protected areas that pops out when tilted in the light. A real treat for the specialist certain to see spirited bidding from many collectors, the chance to acquire such a high grade example of this type seldom occur, and as such serious consideration should be taken by potential bidders."

The province of Sinkiang is majority Muslim, being inhabited by Turks and Uighurs. Many of the provincial issues of the late empire and early republic were dated using the AH calendar. This type was struck in many varieties for AH 1327-1328, each die being hand made.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 17.2 g, silver.
