from Künker sale 352, lot 2141

This specimen was lot 2141 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$9,046 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Fassungsspuren, Felder geglättet, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, Christian, 1639-72, double ducat of 1672, Brieg mint, on his death. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned eagle, head turned left, initials below. Extremely rare, mountmark, fields smoothed, very fine.)"

Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. The coinage ceased when the last of the local dukes died in 1675. This scarce type was struck 1666, 1670 and 1672, which is odd for a death commemorative.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6,85 g.

Catalog reference: KM 494, Fr-3212; F. u. S. 1944; Kopicki 5478 (R6).
