Steve Album sale 54, lot 718

This specimen was lot 718 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "SIKH EMPIRE: AR 1/4 rupee, Amritsar, VS1885, with frozen date VS1885, a rare denomination and an attractive toned nearly mint state example, PCGS graded AU58." This type was struck VS 1885-86, 1892, 1895, 1897. The date "۸۵" is visble at the top of the reverse. This example realized four times the catalog value. The Sikhs were crushed in AD 1849 (VS 1906) and their coinage ended.
