Sincona sale 80, lot 2803

This specimen was lot 2803 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$599 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY | Sicily, Ferdinand III. 1759-1816. Grano 1801, Palermo. Extremely fine, Extraordinary condition." This type was struck 1801-03 as Ferdinand took refuge from the Napoleonic invasion of his mainland kingdom of Naples. It is the smallest denomination of the Sicilian coinage and is rather scarce in nice condition. In 1816, Naples and Sicily were permanently joined and the separate coinage for the island ended.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.70 g, copper, 19 mm diameter, this specimen 2.85 g.

Catalog reference: KM 241, Mont. 401 (R). MIR 645/1.
