Sicily 1785-GLC 30 tari Dav-1416
This specimen was lot 1818 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,486 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Neapel - Sizilien Ferdinando IV. (I.), 1759-1825. 30 Tari 1785, Palermo. Selten. Sehr schön. (Naples and Sicily, Ferdinand IV, 1759-1825, thirty tari of 1785, Palermo mint. Rare, very fine.)"
Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Ferdinand IV was the third son of Charles III, king of Spain 1759-88 and the younger brother of Charles IV. Oncias or thirty tari were issued irregularly from Palermo in the eighteenth century. All are rare.
