Sicily 1697-RC scudo d'oro Fr-881
This specimen was lot 2799 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$9,588 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALY | Sicily, Carlo II. 1665-1700. Scudo Riccio 1697, Palermo. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS62. (Italy, kingdom of Sicily, Charles II, 1665-1700, scudo of 1697, Palermo mint. Very rare, especially in this condition.)"
This very rare type was struck 1697 only and was the only time this denomination was issued for Sicily in the seventeenth century. The degenerate Charles II was the last Hapsburg king of Spain.
