Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 1865
Sedwick 38-1865r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1865 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALIAN STATES, Sicily (kingdom), Messina, 4 tari, Philip IV of Spain, 1650 IP. Lustrous Mint State piece with nicely detailed eagle and clear date, bust a bit obscured from doubling, lightly cleaned." This type was struck at Messina 1621-28, 1632, 1636-38, 1642-56, 1659-65. The Messina mint struck half, one, two, three and four tari in 1650. Four tari was one third of a piastra. For 1650, we note four tari dated 1650-IP, 1650-IP MP and 1650-IP PP. While not rare, few are available in collectible condition due to the crudity of the strike.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 10.39 grams.

Catalog reference: KM-21.
