Sicily 1636-IP 3 tari
This specimen was lot 71603 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples & Sicily (Sicily). 3 Tari, 1636-IP. Messina Mint. Philip IV of Spain. PCGS AU-58. Obverse: Crowned bust left, wearing ornate collar; Reverse: Cross fleurée, crown at ends. Despite some flan roughness, this example presents bold details and very little evidence of actual wearing on the surfaces." The portrait is of Philip IV of Spain. The Spanish Hapsburgs ruled Naples and Sicily as part of their Aragonese inheritance from the death of Ferdinand the Catholic in 1517 until the death of Charles II in 1700. Three tari equaled one fourth of a piastra. This type is listed for 1620-65 and is scarce.
