Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 47181
SB825-47181r.jpg

This specimen was lot 47181 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sicily. 4 Tari, 1552. Messina Mint. Charles V. NGC EF-40. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This type was struck for Charles V towards the end of his reign. This is a slightly later type (KM MB83 of 1555-56) with the denomination changed from four pellets, shown here, to a "4". Charles spent much time in Italy, where his soldiers sacked Rome in 1527, but we don't think he ever visited Sicily.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.5 g, silver, 33-37 mm diameter, this specimen 11.55 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB81, MIR-286.
