Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 39046
SB125-39046r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39046 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sicily. 1/2 Tari, ND (ca. 1533-38)-IP. Messina Mint. Carlo V (Charles I of Spain). NGC AU-55." While this coin matches the images shown in Numista for the half taris of Charles V, the weight is double the specification. This type also comes dated. Charles spent much time in Italy, where his soldiers sacked Rome in 1527, but we don't think he ever visited Sicily.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.35 g, silver, 17 mm diameter, this specimen 2.93 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB42, MIR-281.
