Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 261

This specimen was lot 261 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Joan II (1458-1479). Sicília. Pirral. Ex Calicó 26/02/1987, nº 221. Ex Colección Baucis. MBC+. (kingdom of Sicily, John of Aragon, 1458-68, pirral, choice very fine."

John (1398-1479, Joan in Catalan) was king of Navarre 1425-79, king of Aragon 1458-79 and king of Sicily 1458-79. During his reign, Naples was ruled 1458-94 by Ferrante, the illegitimate son of Alfono V of Aragon. His death in 1494 attracted the attention of the king of France, who invaded Italy to press his claim to the throne. The resulting war devastated all of Italy and resulted in Spanish control of Naples after 1504. It was the beginning of the end of the Renaissance.
