Shanghai 1940 token rev LK.jpg
the Fourth Marines Club in 1938, on 722 Bubbling Well Road, Shanghai

The Fourth Regiment of the United States Marines was stationed in the international settlement of Shanghai from 1927 to November 1941. They were originally sent to protect the city from warlords but as the thirties progressed, the Japanese became the major threat. The Marines were billeted at various locations in the city. We don't know where this token was issued or used but this example clearly saw considerable wear. We have filed this under Kiangnan Province but Shanghai was separated from that province in 1927 and made an independent city.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: brass.
