Schwyz 1793 groschen
This specimen was lot 4429 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schwyz, Groschen 1793, Schwyz. Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 20, Zürich, Oktober 2014, Los 3464. (Switzerland, canton of Schwyz, groschen of 1793, Schwyz mint. Rare, Fine-Very Fine.)"
This rare type is listed in the SCWC for 1793 only. This was the only issue of this denomination by this canton. The groschen, or three kreuzer, does not fit the typical Swiss coinage of rappen and batzen. Gold presentation strikes exist. Four kreuzer made a batzen and forty batzen made a thaler. Schwyz is one of the three original cantons of the Swiss confederation, formed in 1291.
Record mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.30 g, billon, 20 mm diameter, this specimen 1.33 g.
