Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp 1611 thaler Dav-3689
The first specimen was lot 2739 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,131 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Herzogtum, Johann Adolf, 1590-1616. Taler 1611, Schleswig. Vorzüglich. Herrliche Patina. (Germany, duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, John Adolf, 1590-1616, thaler of 1611. Extremely fine, Most attractive patina.)"
The second specimen was lot 11479 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €336 (about US$350). The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Taler, 1611. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Johann Adolf. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare. The first example realized only one-third of its catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.96 g, the second specimen 28.86 g.
