Sincona sale 98, lot 4366

This specimen was lot 4366 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$870 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Vierer 1580, Schaffhausen. Sehr selten. Fast sehr schön. Flecken. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 5844.. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, vierer of 1580, Schaffhausen mint. Very rare, About Very Fine, Spots.)"

A vierer was half a kreuzer and was the smallest denomination in most of the cantons. We're not sure what dates exist but we know of 1553, 1560, 1580 (shown here) and 1585. At this time, one thaler made 24 groschen or 72 kreuzer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: billon, this specimen 0.54 g.

Catalog reference: Wielandt (Schaffhausen) 56 var, HMZ 2-757k.
