Sayn and Wittgenstein in 1789

This specimen was lot 1826 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,482 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAYN-WITTGENSTEIN-BERLEBURG, Georg V (1605-1631), AV Goldgulden, s.d. (1623-1626). Au titre de Ferdinand II. D/ MON: NO: AVR: CO: IN: WITGN: Ecu orné. R/ *FER: II· D: G: RO: IMP: SE: A* Aigle impériale couronnée. De la plus haute rareté. Très Beau. Combinaison de coins inédite, avec un coin de droit du premier type frappé par Johan Schmidt et un coin de revers du troisième type. (Germany, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, George V, 1605-31, undated goldgulden, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Obverse: ornate arms; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Extremely rare, Very Fine. From a previously unpublished die marriage, using an obverse die of John Smith and a reverse die of the third type.)"

This insignifcant county, wedged between Hesse-Darmstadt and the duchy of Westphalia, was raised to a principality in 1792, then mediatized to Hesse in 1806 before being annexed to Prussia in 1816. The count was not a regular issuer of gold coins but in this period struck nine different goldgulden: KM 16 (= Fr-3050a), 17 (= Fr-3054), 18 (= Fr-3056), 19, 20 (= Fr-3051), 21 (= Fr-3057), 22 (= Fr-3053, shown here), 23, 24.
