This specimen was lot 77317 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1638-SD. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. PCGS AU-50." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1638-56. The previous type (Dav-7601) had six helmets on the reverse instead of eight. It is not rare but is less common than issues of the previous reign.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29 g, silver, 45 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-7612; KM-425.
