Saxony 1581-HB thaler Dav-9798
This specimen was lot 5389 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €280 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, August, 1553-1586. Reichstaler 1581, Dresden. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung UNC DETAILS CLEANED (4824332-006). Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, min. berieben, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (electorate of Saxony, August, 1553-86, thaler of 1581, Dresden mint. Minor planchet flaws, cleaned, very fine to extremely fine, graded NGC UNC DETAILS CLEANED.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type was struck 1567-86 at Dresden and is common.
