Saxony 1565-HB thaler Dav-9795
This specimen was lot 5388 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,068 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, August, 1553-1586. Taler 1565, Dresden. Äußerst selten in dieser Erhaltung. Kabinettstück. Prachtvolle Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (electorate of Saxony, August, 1553-86, thaler of 1565, Dresden mint. Extremely rare in this quality, cabinet piece, outstanding patina, about uncirculated.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type was struck 1556-67 at Dresden and is common.
