Künker sale 293, lot 1170

This specimen was lot 1170 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €440 (about US$593 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich der Großmütige und Moritz, 1541-1547. Taler 1546, Annaberg. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John Frederick and Maurice, 1541-47, thaler of 1546, Annaberg mint. Small planchet cracks, extremely fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type is an early date for Saxony and is listed for 1542-47. It was issued by the Ernestine branch of the dynasty, which lost the electoral cap in 1547.
