This specimen was lot 4542 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,328 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG UND GOTHA, HERZOGTUM Ernst I., 1826-1844. Dukat 1836. GOLD. RR Nur 1.600 Exemplare geprägt. Von polierten Stempeln, winz. Kratzer, fast Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Harald Möller 42, Espenau 2006, Nr. 1643. (duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest I, 1826-44, ducat of 1836. Very rare, only 1,600 examples struck. Struck from polished dies, minor hairlines, about uncirculated.)"
After the extinction of the Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg line in 1825, noisy disputes arose over who of the Saxon dukes should obtain the property. Finally, the king of Saxony produced the treaty of Hildburghausen in 1826. Ernest III, erstwhile duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, received Gotha in exchange for Saalfeld and became Ernest I, duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The state survived until 1918, when all the monarchies were liquidated following the collapse of the Empire. Gotha became part of Thuringia and Coburg went to Bavaria. This rare ducat was also struck in 1842.
Recorded mintage: 1,600.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3,47 g.
