Savoy 1601 ducat Fr-1056
This specimen was lot 42371 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Savoy. Ducat, 1601. Turin Mint. Carlo Emanuele I. PCGS AU-55. Featuring the Madonna cradling the Holy Infant, this alluring hammered issue presents a solid and fairly well centered strike, with just a light degree of circulation and pleasing luster remaining among the protected areas." The SCWC lists this for 1601-03. None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the seventeenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720.
