This specimen was lot 5060 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $7,360. The catalog description [2] noted, "Italian States - Savoy. Ducatone, 1590. Carlo Emanuele I, 1580-1630. Bust right with date below. Reverse: Crowned crossed arms dividing FE - RT. Nicely toned. Very Rare. NGC graded EF-45." This type was struck 1590-91 and is known for Turin (mintmark "T") and Chambéry (mintmark "BA"). None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the sixteenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720.
