Sincona sale 54, lot 660

This specimen was lot 660 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$3,570 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlo Emanuele I. 1580-1630. Doppia 1585, Torino. Con sigla T. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Schröglingsfehler am Rand. (duchy of Savoy, Charles Emanuel I, 1580-1630, doppia of 1585, Turin mint, mintmark T. Rare, About very fine, Flan defect on the edge.)"

Friedberg lists this coin for 1580-1611 in several varieties, all rare. The doppia may have started out as a double ducat (7 g) but kept sliding in weight. We don't see the "T" mintmark mentioned in the auction description.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.67 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.55 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 579 g. Fr-1049.
