Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 963

This specimen was lot 963 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sardinia (Italian States), bronze 2 denari, 1780, NGC MS 62 BN, finest and only example in NGC census. Reddish orange color, full details but monogram-side rim weak (as made), choice grade." The Duchy of Savoy was an Italian state wedged between France and Milan and was often the victim of invasions from both directions. In 1720, the duke acquired the island of Sardinia and promoted himself to king of Sardinia. This type was struck 1773-96 with an estimated total mintage of 19,000,000. It is probably not rare--it has a low catalog value--but it is likely very scarce in nice condition. Twelve denari made a soldo, twenty soldi made a lira and six lire made a scudo.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, 1.56-2.05 g, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-64.
