Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1420

This specimen was lot 1420 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 240 € (about US$311 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1700. Carlos II. Cagliari. 2 1/2 reales. Rare. MBC [very fine]." This obscure type is listed for 1694-1700. The "12 - 6" on the obverse means 12 soldi and 6 denari. Cagliari was the capital of Sardinia while it was under Spanish rule. After a brief spell of Austrian occupation, it passed to the duke of Savoy in 1720, who named himself the king of Sardinia as a result.
