Salzburg 1661 thaler Dav-3505
This specimen was lot 3239 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €195 (about US$276 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM, Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-1668. Reichstaler 1661. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-68, thaler of 1661. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1654-68 and is common.
