This specimen was lot 20235 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. 2 Ducat, 1606. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612). NGC AU-58. Saint Rupert seated; Reverse: Archbishop's oval Arms. Nicely struck, glistening bright gold without a trace of tone. SCARCE at this grade level, with most other examples encountered having problems." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814. Friedberg lists this type for 1601-11.
