Salzburg 1523 2 ducats Fr-596a
This specimen was lot 2521 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$12,922 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-1540. Doppelte Dukatenklippe 1523, auf die Niederwerfung des Salzburger Bürgeraufstandes. Stempel von Ulrich Ursentaler d. Ä. Brustbild l. in geistlichem Ornat mit Birett, umher Laubkranz//Vier Zeilen Schrift, darüber florale Ornamente, unten Stifts- und Familienwappen nebeneinander zwischen Zweigen, umher Laubkranz. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Kl. gestopftes Loch am oberen Rand, sonst attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldpatina, vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang of Wellenburg, 1519-40, double klippe ducat of 1523. Extremely rare, small plug on the edge, a very attractive example with fine gold patina, extremely fine.)
Im Jahr 1523 begehrte die Salzburger Bürgerschaft gegen den Landesherren auf und forderte mehr Rechte und Mitsprache. Matthäus Lang konnte die unblutige Auseinandersetzung, den sogenannten "Lateinischen Krieg", für sich entscheiden und dadurch seine Machtstellung stärken. Die Bürger mussten schriftlich auf die strittigen Rechte verzichten und eine Zwangsanleihe in Höhe von 4.000 Gulden aufnehmen. (In the year 1523, the citizens of Salzburg rebelled against the archbishop and demanded more rights. Matthäus Lang was able to win the bloodless conflict, the so-called "Latin War", and thereby strengthen his position of power. The citizens had to waive the disputed rights in writing and make a forced loan of 4,000 guilders.)"
Friedberg reports both square (Fr-596a) and round versions (Fr-596b) of this coin, with the klippe shown here as expensive and the round version too rare to price.
