Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 39657

This specimen was lot 39657 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 50 Rubles, 2014-SP. St. Petersburg Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. 2014 Sochi Olympics, Biathlon. A lovely flawless specimen honoring the Sochi Olympics, with flawless details and handsome frosting." The fifty rubles was used for the following Olympic commemoratives: KM Y1300, Y1301, Y1479, Y1480, Y1487, Y1488, Y1495 (biathlon, shown here), Y1496, Y1521. The biathlon, developed from Norwegian army exercises, was made an Olympic sport in 1955. Friedberg lists this coin for 2013, not 2014.

Recorded mintage: 20,000.

Specification: 7.78 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.250 troy oz AGW.
