This specimen was part of lot 21827 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), which sold for $4,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Six-piece set of Commemorative gold 100 Roubles issued for the 1980 Olympics, ...KM Y186, 1980-M, all are .50 oz AGW, 0.900 fine, all are Gem Proof in the original case with certificates. AGW 3.0000 oz." The Russian Communist regime, in its declining years, issued dozens of commemoratives in various metals as a means of earning foreign exchange. This was produced at Leningrad and Moscow (shown here).
Recorded mintage: 25,000 plus 28,000 proofs from Leningrad.
