UBS sale 84, lot 1599

This specimen was lot 1599 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND. Elisabeth, 1741-1761. Rubel 1741, St. Petersburg. Drapiertes Brustbild mit Diadem nach rechts. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Georgswappen auf der Brust. NGC XF45. Patina. Kl. Kr. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich." (Russia, Elizabeth, 1741-61. Ruble of 1741, St. Petersburg mint. Obv: draped bust with diadem facing right. Rev: Crowned double-headed eagle bearing a shield depicting St. George slaying the dragon. Patina, nice extremely fine).

The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Many ruble types were issued only briefly and can be dated even if they don't bear dates. This type, issued 1741 only, is very rare. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 25.8 grams.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen: 25.59 grams.
