Goldberg sale 91, lot 3132
Romania G91-3132r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3132 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Romania. 50 Lei, 1983-FM NGC PF67 UC. For the 2,050 Anniversary of First Independent State. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo." While power outages darkened Bucharest and children starved in the orphanages, the Communist regime commissioned the Franklin Mint to produce a series of silver and gold commemoratives to honor the 2,050 Anniversary of First Independent State. They were minted in 1982-83 in denominations of fifty, hundred, five hundred and one thousand lei. The coinage of Communist Romania is scanty and most years saw none issued at all.

Specification: 28 mm diameter, 15 g, 0.925 fine silver, .443 troy oz ASW.

Recorded Mintage: 7,000 plus 1,000 proofs.

Catalog reference: KM-100.
