This specimen was part of lot 21368 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), which sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 50 Bani & Leu, 1910. Brussels Mint. NGC PROOF-65. Stamb-67-1.1; KM-41 & 42. Reeded edge, coin die axis, without ESSAI markings. Nicely matched GEM PROOF examples of these production type issues. Extremely deep toning loaded with color, and with generous amounts of mirrored surface serving to remind of the coin's proof status. From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli Collection." This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1910-14. The weight and fineness matches that of a French half franc and Italian fifty centesimi. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1914, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the fifty bani resumed in 1921, it was an aluminum coin.

Recorded mintage: 3,600,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-41.
