SB826-41590r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41590 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Renfrewshire, Port Glasgow. Robert Crighton. 4 Shillings 6 Pence, ND (ca. 1820). PCGS VF-35. Countermark applied to the obverse and reverse of an 1807-Mo TH Mexico 8 Reales of Charles IV. Featuring a rather boldly applied countermark, this VERY RARE type displays a host that is only lightly circulated and toned a pleasing subtle hue. Ex: Dix Noonan Webb 43 (10/1999) Lot # 1097." Scotland in the early nineteenth century was tearing into the Industrial Revolution and manufacturers were eager for coin to facilitate trade. As the Royal Mint could not keep up, many private issues appeared. Spanish dollars circulated freely and many of these were countermarked; the SCWC records over a hundred different countermarks. Today they are all rare. This counterstamp is one of several attributed to the Glasgow region.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-CC89; Manville-87.
