Rhodesia 1977 1/2 cent
This specimen was lot 30489 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 1/2 Cent 1977 MS64 Red and Brown NGC. An extremely rare modern issue, with most of the dates mintage having been melted and resultantly, never released into circulation. A well struck example, the surfaces hold mostly even, faded red color; a touch of color variegation does however reside in the left obverse field. The only other example we have offered, graded AU55 by NGC, sold for $1,645 in our April 2013 auction. As such, we expect this far superior example to perhaps be rather conservatively estimated." This type was minted 1970-72 and 1975 in large numbers and is common. This date was never released as noted above and is now very rare. Perhaps trade sanctions prevented its shipment to Rhodesia.
Recorded mintage: unknown, nearly all melted.
Specification: bronze, 20 mm diameter.
