Regensburg 1792 thaler Dav-2632
This specimen was lot 198 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REGENSBURG, STADT, Konv.-Taler 1792, mit Titel von Franz II. auf die Wiederherstellung der Steinernen Brücke und auf die Überbringung der Nachricht der Wahl von Franz II. zum Kaiser. Vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Regensburg, convention thaler of 1792, struck in the name of Francis II, on the restoration of the Stone Bridge and the delivery of the news of the election of Francis II as emperor. Extremely fine.)
Im April 1791 faßte der Magistrat den Beschluß den 1633 gesprengten Bogen der Steinernen Brücke, die bisher durch eine sehr reparaturanfällige Holzkonstruktion ersetzt worden war, wieder herstellen zu lassen. Am 27. Juni wurde nach 42tägiger Arbeit feierlich der Schlußstein gesetzt. Zur Verschönerung der Brücke wurde noch im gleichen Jahr das hölzerne Zollhäuschen abgerissen, das bisher auf der Brückenmitte gestanden hatte, und ein steinernes Brückenmännchen als Schmuck auf die Brücke gesetzt. Auf die Wiederherstellung der Brücke wurde eine Medaille geschlagen, welche eine dem Konventionstaler von 1792 sehr ähnliche Ansicht zeigt und die Umschrift trägt: RESTAURATIO PONTIS SAXEI RATISPON, im Abschnitt MDCCLXXXXI. (In April 1791, the magistrate decided to have the arch of the Stone Bridge, which had been blown up in 1633, restored and which had previously been replaced by a wooden structure that required constant repairs. On June 27th, after 42 days of work, the keystone was ceremonially set. In order to beautify the bridge, the wooden customs house that had previously stood in the middle of the bridge was torn down in the same year and a stone sculpture was placed on the bridge as decoration. A medal was struck on the restoration of the bridge, which shows a view very similar to the convention thaler from 1792 and bears the inscription: RESTAURATIO PONTIS SAXEI RATISPON, in the exergue MDCCLXXXXI.)
Der Konventionstaler, dessen Vorderseite den Entwurf der Medaille wiederholt, dürfte, da er als erster den neuen Kaiser Franz II. zeigt, zusätzlich als Anspielung auf die Überbringung der Nachricht von der erfolgten Kaiserwahl gedacht und verstanden worden sein. Die Nachricht von der Erwählung zum Kaiser überbrachte Fürst Esterhazy am 7. Juli 1792 Franz II. auf dem Weg zwischen Regensburg und Pfatter (das etwa 20 km ostwärts von Regensburg liegt). Die ungewöhnliche Stadtansicht mit dem Blick nach Osten und der aufgehenden Sonne mag als Symbol für diesen Vorgang gedacht gewesen sein (siehe Egon Beckenbauer, Die Münzen der Reichsstadt Regensburg, S. 404). (The convention thaler, the obverse of which repeats the design of the medal, was probably also intended and understood as an allusion to the delivery of the news of the emperor's election, as it was the first to show the new Emperor Francis II. Prince Esterhazy brought the news of his election as emperor to Franz II on July 7, 1792 on the way between Regensburg and Pfatter (which is about 20 km east of Regensburg). The unusual city view with the view to the east and the rising sun may have been intended as a symbol of this process (see Egon Beckenbauer, The Coins of the Imperial City of Regensburg, p. 404).)"
The city lost its independence in 1803 when it was incorporated into Karl von Dahlberg's principality of Regensburg, then turned over to Bavaria in 1810, where it remains.
