large size $5

This specimen was lot 18040 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "Redlands, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 598 The Redlands NB Ch. # (P)7259. Just six notes are known from this bank, one of this San Bernardino County community's two really rare issuers. It was missing from the Krakover sale and even the Colver collection contained only a low grade Very Good-Fine example with closely trimmed margins and no signatures. This is a far superior piece even with the two small nicks and spots at the top margin, with the appearance of this example in Lowell's holdings marking only the fourth time in six decades that any example from this bank has been available to the collecting fraternity at public sale. Fine-Very Fine."

The second of four banks chartered in this San Bernardino County locale, and one which did not survive long enough to issue Series 1929 examples as it elected to close its doors in 1922. This offering is one of only a dozen reported and is a note that we last handled in our first Memphis auction in June of 1994. It features nice color for the grade with a few internal tears. From the Norris Turner Collection."
