Reckheim (north of Maastricht) in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 769 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RECKHEIM, Willem van Vlodorp (1553-1564), Co oord. Vz/ REC- IMB Leeuw onder een kasteel met drie torens. Kz/ Lelie tussen vier sikkels en V-V-I-L. Zeer zeldzaam. (lordship of Reckheim, William of Vlodorp, 1553-64, copper oort. Obverse: a lion under a castle with three towers; reverse: a lily within the initials 'V-V-I-L'. Very rare, very Fine.)"

Oord was Dutch for liard and eighty oord made a gulden. The town of Reckheim (modern spelling Rekem) is on the west bank of the river Maas (Meuse), today in Belgium. It and neighboring Neerharen were merged into the larger town of Lanaken in the late nineteenth century.
