Ragusa 1747 tallero Dav-1637
This specimen was lot 2790 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KROATIEN Ragusa, Tallero Rettorale 1747, Ragusa. Gutes sehr schön. (republic of Ragusa, rector's thaler of 1747, Ragusa mint. Good very fine.)"
This coin is an example of a type struck 1743-48 for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. KM 16, with St. Blasius on the obverse, is also rumored for 1747.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.17 g.
