Qatar 2006 50 dirhams
This specimen was lot 1484 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "QATAR: Hamad b. Khalifa al-Thani, 1995-2013, AR 50 dirhams, 2006/AH1427, KM-15a, off-metal strike in silver, struck at the Austrian State Mint, PCGS graded Proof 68 DCAM, RR." The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. Dubai joined the United Arab Emirates while Qatar chose to become independent. The economy is entirely dependent on oil. This type is listed in copper-nickel for 2006, 2008, 2012; no silver issue is mentioned.
