Steve Album sale 51, lot 2220

This specimen was lot 2220 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFSHARID: Nadir Shah, 1735-1747, AE square falus, Qandahar, ND, the royal legend of Nadir Shah // mint formula; struck on folded-over part of a copper sheet, VF, RR." Altho the auctioneers have attributed this to Iran, it more properly belongs to Afghanistan, where Qandahar is now located. The copper falus was a local municipal issue not designed to circulate beyond the city's bazaars. Few are shown in the SCWC and this one is not included.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 8.70 g.

Catalog reference: A-D2756.
