Prussia 1778-A thaler Dav-2590
This specimen was lot 70724 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. Taler, 1778-A. Berlin Mint. Friedrich II. NGC EF-40. This decently preserved example exhibits a good strike and even wear displaying rich mottled gray patina. The obverse does show signs of what appears to be adjustment marks mentioned for accuracy." This type was struck at Berlin, Breslau and Königsberg 1775-86, replacing a reichsthaler with a younger bust. The Aurich, Cleve and Magdeburg mints did not participate, having closed earlier. This is a common date.
