Portuguese India 1901 1/8 tanga
This specimen was lot 963 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGUESE INDIA: Carlos I, 1889-1908, AE 1/8 tanga, 1901, a wonderful mint state example with much original red luster! PCGS graded MS64 RB, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This specimen is from a two year type struck for the Portuguese colonies in India. Once extensive, Portuguese dominions had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. Issues up to 1952 were based on the rupee (one rupia = 16 tanga) and struck at the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta. This type was also struck in 1903.
Recorded mintage: 960,000 for 1901 and 1903.
Specification: bronze, 21 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-14.
