This specimen was lot 74304 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. 1/4 Tanga, 1871. Calcutta Mint. Luis I. PCGS EF-45. This beautiful piece displays light and even wear on the surfaces and serves as a wonderful budget example of this SCARCE date." Once extensive, Portuguese dominions in India had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. In 1869 the mint at Goa, which had produced hammered coinage, was closed. In 1871, a new series of milled coinage, struck by the British, was introduced. Issues up to 1952 were based on the rupee (one rupia = 16 tanga) and struck at Bombay and Calcutta.

Recorded mintage: 51,000, not listed as scarce.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-304; Gomes-06.01.
