Poland SB118-24684o.jpg

The first specimen was lot 30398 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof "Zbigniew Herbert" 200 Zlotych 2008-MW PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, Warsaw mint. An essentially perfect example of this commemorative coin struck in honor of 20th century poet, essayist, drama writer and moralist Zbigniew Herbert." The second specimen was lot 24684 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[2] noted, "POLAND. 200 Zlotych, 2008-MW. NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. Zbigniew Herbert. Hard mirror fields with frosted cameo devices. Brilliant and attractive." Poland obtained her freedom in the early 1990's with the fall of the Berlin Wall but the new government found the treasury as empty as before. NCLT's ("Non Circulating Legal Tender" coinage) were issued in a bewildering array to help stem the flow. This one honors poet Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998).

Recorded mintage: 11,200.

Specification: 15.5 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-224; Y-643.
