Poland 1949 grosz

This type was struck 1949 as part of a series of coins for the newly restored republic of Poland after the defeat of the Nazis. Alas, the new independence was only nominal as Stalin had no intention of allowing the Poles, whose appetite for rebellion he feared and respected, any real freedom. Poland would not attain her freedom until the collapse of Communism in the late 1980's. This coin was accompanied by two, five, ten, twenty and fifty groszy and a one zloty.

Recorded mintage: 400,116,000 from Warsaw and Budapest.
