This specimen was lot 1358 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND: Nicholas I, of Russia, 1825-1855, AR 50 groszy/25 kopeks, 1846-MW, hints of luster, VF-EF." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. This issue was struck 1842-50 in Warsaw. Fifty groszy equaled twenty-five kopeks or 1-2/3 of a zloty. Russian coinage for Poland ended in 1850.
