Poland 1835-MW zloty
This specimen was lot 1357 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND: Nicholas I, of Russia, 1825-1855, AR zloty/15 kopeks, Warsaw, 1835, a wonderful lustrous example! PCGS graded MS64." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. This issue was struck 1832-41 in Warsaw and St. Petersburg. One zloty equalled thirty groszy. Russian coinage for Poland ended in 1850. This example realized sixteen times the catalog value in EF.
